Chris Staples recently came to me for a new shirt design for his upcoming tour with Manchester Orchestra. He wanted a design that was type-based but approached in a more obscure way. Since he was totally cool with legibility taking the back seat to form, we settled on a very geometric composition. The design is made up of a series of repeating shapes that were assembled in multiple ways to reference the basic elements of individual letters. By placing these in a grid, the design can easily be misinterpreted as nothing more than a series block-like forms. Chris really liked this approach, forcing the viewer to take a minute and put the pieces together in their brains as apposed to just slapping his name across someones chest.
